Being transgender is not a mental health disorder. This is contrary to what the Peruvian government claims in its recent decree classifying transgender people as mentally ill.

This classification has been debunked by various mental health organizations globally. As a matter of fact, the World Health Organization dropped in 2019 "gender identity disorder" from its global manual of diagnoses.

Queer Safe Spaces maintains that having a gender identity different from the sex assigned at birth, as well as the desire to express one's gender in the way that feels most authentic, is a normal aspect of human expression— and there is nothing wrong with that.
